In 2020, during two months of April and May, Corona virus swept the world, and all our travel plans had been canceled. We (I and Mavic) managed to escape Bangkok just a few days before its complete lockdown and reach a small and quiet Koh Phayam island in Ranong province. There still were hopes that nothing serious will happen, and maybe we can travel - if not to Myanmar, then, at least, in southern Thailand. Alas! Alas! All country was suddenly closed, and no buses going in any direction.
So we had to adapt to the new rules of the game, and make our life comfortable and happy during these uncertain times. We quickly fell into a new routine of swimming, reading, socializing with few other stranded foreigners and locals as much as it was possible ‘coz of language and culture barriers, walking, acquiring new survival skills – learning to open coconuts, roasting cashew nuts, digging out small clams from the sand as the locals do, etc. - in other words went as native as possible.:)
We made friends with one local family in whose restaurant we were dining. Tried some very delicious local foods.
Mavic continued working on her paintings and I got into my little “charry” (charango) practice.
I recorded a couple of songs in the Koh Phayam hostel’s toilet – ‘coz the sound was better there than in our room - and some local sounds hoping to create an album of them in the future - which is now.
We managed to get out of the island after more than two months when lockdown started easing up, and local transport slowly picked on.
Our life had been very good there.
